Traditionally, the famous Mobile World Congress exhibition is held in Barcelona in the last month of winter. This event is one of the most significant in the world of mobile technologies and services. The exhibition will last four days - from February 22 to 25.

The popularity of Mobile World Congress lies, first of all, in its scale. Representatives of a large number of countries are participating in the exhibition. Thus, last year the number of participants included 93,000 professionals from the field of mobile technologies. This became a record for all the years of the exhibition's existence. Among the annual participants are mobile content producers, mobile operators, and representatives of the IT sector. Due to the high prestige of Mobile World Congress, it is mandatory for directors and top managers of specialized companies to attend it. Among the star participants, it is worth noting Bill Ford, Eric Schmitt, Hans Vestberg, who visited the exhibition in different years.

This year, 2,000 companies are scheduled to participate in Mobile World Congress. They present to the public a huge number of gadgets and mobile devices, without which it is impossible to imagine a modern person.

In addition to the exhibition itself, the Mobile World Congress program includes conferences, seminars, summits, and partner events. Of particular interest is the Mobile Explorers Club, the so-called Junior Club. It is an interactive platform where young talents aged 8 to 15 years have the opportunity to take part in specialized workshops and workshops.

As usual, Mobile World Congress takes place at the Fira Gran Via conference center, whose huge halls provide comfortable accommodation for all exhibitors. The exhibition will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Only on the last day this time will be reduced to 16:00.

Anyone can attend the exhibition, but this opportunity requires the purchase of an entrance ticket. For convenience, the organizers have identified several categories of tickets. The most expensive ones, “platinum”, cost 4999 euros. Having such a ticket gives you the opportunity to attend any Mobile World Congress event without any restrictions. For 2699 you can purchase a “golden” ticket.” It does not allow access only to the Platinum Expirience, where top managers of the world's leading companies meet. There is also a “silver” ticket and a “standard” ticket, which cost 2199 and 749 euros respectively. The latter differs only in that it does not provide access to the Global Mobile Awards ceremony.

An ordinary tourist is unlikely to be interested in this, but it is worth keeping in mind that on these dates in Barcelona there is a very big problem with hotel places, since the city needs to accommodate about 100,000 people.

Mobile World Congress (MWC) This is the world's largest mobile industry exhibition and congress with the participation of the world's largest mobile equipment manufacturers and telecom operators. Every February, thousands of participants and visitors from all over the world come to Barcelona for this event.

This year the exhibition took place from February 26 to March 1. During this period, experimental developments by Huawei and Qualcomm in the field of 5G networks were presented, as well as new mobile devices from brands such as Sony, Samsung, Alcatel, Asus, Nokia, LG and many others were presented. Each company tried to surprise not only the consumer, but also its competitors, demonstrating its advanced technologies. We have collected for you only the most interesting developments, which we will tell you about in detail.

Samsung

On the “zero” day of the exhibition, Samsung held a presentation, during which it showed its new flagship smartphones – Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, which outwardly practically do not differ from last year’s Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. A clear difference can only be noticed on the back of the smartphones, because now the fingerprint scanner is located directly under the camera.

Also among the pleasant innovations, it is worth noting the appearance in the smartphone of stereo speakers and new, very improved 12-megapixel cameras with the ability to switch the aperture, record HD video at 960 frames per second and quickly focus even in poor lighting. Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus also received a second 12-megapixel module with a telephoto lens, allowing you to take pictures with a blurred background. The front camera of the devices has a resolution of 8 megapixels, an f/1.7 aperture, wide-angle optics with a viewing angle of 80 degrees and the ability to create AR Emoji - 3D emoticons that resemble you not only in face and voice, but also in facial expressions.

Traditionally, smartphones have received a performance boost thanks to the new Samsung Exynos 9 9810, 2.9 GHz processor (for Europe and Russia) or Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, 2.8 GHz (for the USA). The simple version of the smartphone received 4 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and the plus version received 6 GB. The ARM Mali-G71 MP18 video chip is responsible for the graphics in both devices. And the operating system is Android 8.0 Oreo.

Both smartphones are protected from moisture and dust according to the IP68 standard and have Super AMOLED displays with a resolution of 2960 × 1440 pixels, an aspect ratio of 18.5:9 and tempered Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The screen size of the Galaxy S9 is 5.8 inches, and Galaxy S9 Plus – 6.2.

It will be possible to purchase smartphones in Russia starting March 16 in three colors: black diamond, titanium and ultraviolet. Galaxy S9 will cost 59,990 rubles, Galaxy S9 Plus with 64 GB of internal memory will cost 66,990 rubles, and the version with 256 GB will cost 74,990 rubles.

Sony

Sony, in addition to a large number of accessories, including a new wireless charger and wireless headphones, introduced the new flagship Xperia XZ2 and its compact version, the Xperia XZ2 Compact. Both devices received a completely updated design called Ambient Flow and, for the first time for the company, Full HD+ displays with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

The company's designers made the smartphones rounded, removed the 3.5 mm connector (the kit includes an adapter for USB Type-C) and moved the fingerprint scanner to the middle of the devices. The main camera module has also moved there.

Xperia XZ2 became the world's first smartphone with a camera that allows you to record video in 4K HDR (HEVC 10-bit HLG BT.2020) and Full HD at 960 frames per second. Also, the 19-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front modules, using special software, have learned to create 3D models of objects and, through 3D scanning of faces, improve the detail of photographs by 10 times. In addition, Sony and Qualcomm have developed a new image processor, resulting in improved color reproduction and reduced noise in low light.

The stereo speakers of smartphones have become 20% louder compared to last year's models. Due to the changed shape of the case, the battery capacity has also increased - 3,180 mAh for the XZ2 and 2,870 mAh for the XZ2 Compact.

Both devices received 4 GB of RAM and a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. The smartphones are protected from moisture and dust according to the IP65/68 standard. The screen is covered with tempered Gorilla Glass 5.

The start of sales is scheduled for spring 2018. The price will be 799 euros for the Sony Xperia XZ2 and 599 for the XZ2 Compact.

Sales of ZenFone 5Z will start in April at a price of 479 euros. This fact automatically makes it the most affordable device at the moment with the top-end Snapdragon 845 processor.

Ulefone

Our selection of the most interesting devices at MWC 2018 is completed by a smartphone from Ulefone called T2 Pro. This device was a real surprise for all visitors. A huge frameless 6.7-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 19:9, a 5000 mAh battery, a dual camera, a Helio P70 processor with 8 GB of RAM and a fingerprint scanner that is built right into the screen. And that is not all. The expected price of the smartphone is only $380! The start of sales is scheduled for August of this year.

Mobile Word Congress is the world's largest mobile industry exhibition. It is attended by mobile operators, mobile device manufacturers and producers of various content for mobile platforms. The exhibition is held annually and acts as a kind of testing ground for the presentation of certain developments of various manufacturers. Many people strive to show mock-ups of devices at the exhibition that are not even really ready yet, in order to stir up public interest in the upcoming release of the device itself.

2019 will be the year of the launch of fifth generation cellular networks. 5G will be one of the major technology themes of the coming year, and tech industry leaders are already preparing for an era of new mobile Internet speeds. According to a new report, two South Korean technology companies - Samsung and LG - will delight the public with 5G smartphones at MWC 2019, which begins at the end of February next year. A very noticeable difference is expected between the innovative products of the two famous mobile device vendors.

Recently, the fact that Valve is about to introduce its virtual reality headset, rumors about which have been in the air for several months. Well, that day has come, only the Valve headset was presented at MWC 2015 not by Gabe Newell’s company, but by the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer HTC. The headset was called Vive and was developed by Taiwanese engineers together with specialists from Valve. It seems that he has acquired a serious competitor.

The Mobile World Congress, which takes place annually in sunny Barcelona, always surprises with interesting devices (smartphones, add-ons and even laptops), and also introduces the public in detail to trends that will actively develop in the coming years.

At the last exhibition, our attention was attracted not only by expensive flagships, but also by attractive budget phones. We decided to collect the most interesting new products that were shown at the exhibition in one material.

1. Best smartphone: Samsung Galaxy S9

Before the start of MWC 2018, we collected a huge number of rumors about new Samsung smartphones and almost all of them were eventually confirmed. Moreover, the Samsung Galaxy S9 has not even gone on sale yet, and has already received an award for. And there is no reason to doubt it.

Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with an f/1.5 aperture, which allows the built-in lens to capture more light and work effectively in low-light conditions. Plus, the camera is capable of slow-motion shooting at an amazing frame rate of 960 fps. The manufacturer himself notes that the main camera module has become the most innovative in the Galaxy line.

2. Best retro phone: Nokia 8110

The company once again managed to attract attention and win the hearts of fans of retro phones. If last year the manufacturer revived the “unkillable” Nokia 3310, this time at the event they presented the classic folding phone Nokia 8110, which won the hearts of millions of users in the late nineties. Then everyone wanted the same phones as in the movie “The Matrix”.

3. Best iPhone clone: ASUS Zenfone 5Z

Okay, the Chinese released a clone of the iPhone, but now it’s the same thing. Before this, the brand could boast of a fairly original smartphone design, but now it has changed its orientation a little. True, the engineers borrowed only the screen notch characteristic of the iPhone, retaining, for example, the 3.5 mm headphone jack. But the iPhone still seems to have more competitors.

ASUS has a top-end processor on board, and the retail price of the new product, according to preliminary data, will be about 36,000 rubles for the minimum version. A device with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory will cost 4,000 more. The aspect ratio of the display, as expected by insiders, is 18.5:9, and the resolution of the IPS screen is 2246x1080 pixels.

4. Best Rugged Phone: Cat S61

The new rugged Cat S61 smartphone from the renowned construction equipment manufacturer is a true workhorse in the truest sense of the word. Like , the new product has a built-in thermal imager from FLIR with updated software.

The Cat S61 also received a laser rangefinder, which allows you to obtain information about the distance between objects within 10 meters. The gadget itself is made according to the military standard MIL-810G, which indicates its maximum protection against external influences.

5. Best AI Phone: LG V30S ThinQ

LG has best implemented artificial intelligence technologies in its smartphone. Firstly, the flagship LG V30S ThinQ smartphone works with Vision AI and Voice AI technologies, thanks to which the mobile device can automatically analyze the environment and select suitable shooting parameters, as well as support 32 voice commands to control the device.

https://youtu.be/aKp0Nw0zSgA

Secondly, with the QLens feature, the LG V30S ThinQ camera can use machine vision to recognize QR codes without requiring third-party software. After this, the smartphone can offer a list of online stores that sell the product whose code was scanned by the camera. In addition, the smartphone will be able to interact with other LG technology that follows the ThinQ concept.

6. Best Budget Smartphone: ZTE Blade V9

For all its strange experiments with technology, ZTE was able to introduce premium technologies into the budget segment. ZTE Blade V9 is equipped with a dual camera, an advanced low-light shooting mode, a screen with a trendy 18:9 aspect ratio, and a glass and metal body.

It's hard to say exactly how they plan to improve images taken in the evening, given the maximum aperture of f/1.8, but we'll try to figure this out during future tests. We also have to check the performance, which the manufacturer does not hesitate to call impressive. The exact price for the new product has not yet been announced, but company representatives say that it will not exceed the cost of 300 US dollars (about 17,000 rubles).

7. Best ghost smartphone: Huawei P20

This year, not all smartphones made it to MWC, but some still made their mark at the exhibition. In particular, the flagship, which will be shown at the official press event in France on March 27. As an advertising campaign, a truck was parked near the convention site with the announcement of an upcoming phone model.

Judging by preliminary data, the flagship solution from Huawei will receive a frameless display with a resolution of 1080x2244 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18.7:9, a triple camera module that will allow you to take pictures in a resolution of 40 megapixels, and will also use machine learning technologies.

8. Best Innovation: Vivo Apex

The premium Chinese brand Vivo has many interesting ideas, which, although they do not always find their implementation in smartphones, the company is not shy about showing them. We were impressed by the newest concept phone, which debuted at Mobile World Congress in a private conference room rather than at the company's booth surrounded by flashbulbs from photojournalists.

Vivo quietly demonstrated the advanced features of the Apex smartphone, which include a display that is completely free of screen frames and has a fingerprint layer (when you press anywhere on the screen, the phone is unlocked using your fingerprint), as well as a self-learning camera.

The smartphone's speakers are also built into the screen, which is a bit like the sound system of Sony TVs, which can pass sound through the screen. These are wildly ambitious features that won't appear even in expensive flagship smartphones for a long time. And using the example of Vivo Apex, the manufacturer simply demonstrates what future generations of smartphones may look like.
